All-American Surgery Update: Six Month Update

First off, I want to apologize for not posting any updates over the last month. I will be 100% honest with you. The last four weeks have been some of the toughest I've ever had.

June is my busiest month of the year at work, my dad is going through a major job transition after working at the same place for 36 years, we're buying a house (yay!) but are having problems with the closing (boo), and on top of all of this it feels like my foot is trying to fall off.

I am really frustrated. My ankle is still red and swollen after even a limited amount of time on my feet. Last weekend we had a major event at my museum, and thank goodness I have amazing volunteers and coworkers because I really had to limit my movement. The above photo is the evening after that event, a day where I took MAYBE 4,000 steps.

This coming Monday, I will have a second surgery, this time to remove the screws from my ankle. When I met with the surgeon last week, he actually speculated that I'm allergic to the titanium screws. I know I have a slight nickel allergy (can't wear cheap earrings) but his guess as to why I'm having so much pain is actually because the upgraded screws still aren't compatible. He's hoping that once we go in and remove them, I'll be back on the road to recovery.

I am pretty anxious about this. Hopefully we pop the screws out and I am back on the road to healing. We're heading to Disney in mid-August, and I want to be able to keep up with my husband and in-laws!

Sorry for the downer post. I wish I had better, happier news to tell you. The plus side here is that I will shortly have a pretty house I can start to make our own, although let me tell you moving in a walking boot is going to be great fun! If anybody has any tips or suggestions on how to manage that, I'm all ears!

  1. Jenna my suggestion is to let all your friends including my family help you with your move!! Just take it easy. Sending positive thoughts for your surgery tomorrow!

  2. Hi Jenna,
Where was your pain from the screws?
I had the All American foot surgery in March. I was doing great, went for my 6 months checkup and the only pain I had
    Was mild nerve pain.
A week later I started having pain on the top of my foot, especially when I lift my big toe. It hurts more at night just laying in bed and early morning when I'm not wearing shoes
    Any suggestions.
I've been following you since before my surgery. Thank you for sharing your story!

    1. Hi! I'm so sorry to hear that you're dealing with pain on your foot. I did have pain from my screw, but only directly at the location of the screw, not referring across my foot. Are you still doing physical therapy? If so, talk to your PT, and if not, call your surgeon and get in to see them ASAP. Pain that far away from the incision site is not good. I hope it resolves soon, let me know what happens!

      Best,
      Jenna

    2. Thank you for your response! I have an appointment with my surgeon a week from Tuesday. As much as I don't want to have another surgery, I'm kind of hoping a screw is causing the problem. I guess that seems like the lesser of the evils.
I will keep you posted. Thanks again!

  3. Good morning,
I went for my appointment this week and they think I am now walking on the outside of my foot. Possible the bones are rubbing together causing the pain.
I will be wearing orthotics for awhile and hopefully they will retrain my foot. :)
